Vaping is quickly growing in popularity among teens and young adults, yet many individuals who vape don’t fully understand the dangers and side effects associated with vaping. What Is Vaping?

Vaping is done using a vape or vaporizer, sometimes also known as a vape pen or e-cigarette. Vapes heat a solution or juice and turn it into an aerosol that is meant to be inhaled. The liquid solution is known by many names, such as e-liquid, e-juice, vape juice, or vape liquid. There are numerous brands of vaporizers, some of which are used to vape basic flavored liquids and some of which are used to vape liquid containing nicotine or THC. While not all vape solutions contain nicotine, they all contain harmful particles that are linked to cancer and general toxicity that affects the heart.

Teen Vaping

From 2011 to 2018, teen vaping increased from 1.5% of teens to 20.8% of teens. Side Effects of Vaping

Since vaping hasn’t been around for terribly long, scientists are still learning and exploring the long-term side effects of vaping. For nicotine-laced vape juice, users may experience immediate effects of the nicotine, such as increased blood pressure, a spike in adrenaline, and increased heart rate. However, most teens and individuals who vape don’t expect those extreme results to occur, but they need to be aware that those are not the only possible outcomes of vaping. Increased likelihood of respiratory illness has been directly linked to vaping, including several different forms of pneumonia and increased wheezing.

Additionally, cardiovascular health is a major concern when it comes to vaping, primarily due to nicotine inhalation. An increased risk of heart attack, stroke, and sudden cardiac death are directly linked to nicotine use, and e-cigarette liquid has been directly linked to cell damage in the blood vessels that can lead to problems with blood pressure and blood clotting. Some individuals have experienced nicotine poisoning due to vaping, and still others have had seizures immediately following the use of a vape.

Although vaping, in general, isn’t considered as harmful as cigarette smoking, there are certain aspects of vaping that make it even more dangerous. First, there are many chemicals in the e-liquid that are not very well-known, so it’s likely that more dangers will be discovered as more research is done into the ingredients in the e-juice. Second, vaping is not as easily quantifiable as smoking cigarettes, so it’s harder to know how much nicotine a person has inhaled when using a vaporizer, which can lead to an increased likelihood of nicotine overdose and more negative responses to the nicotine. Third, the vape pens themselves can be dangerous. We’ve all heard stories of vaporizers exploding, breaking, or burning users, and they can be easily damaged in pockets or bags, which can lead to malfunction and dangerous results.
