Annual women’s wellness visits are an important part of maintaining health and addressing any health concerns that may arise. NCHS offers women’s health services that will personalize annual checkups to each individual, ensuring that each woman leaves the office with all of her questions answered and with as much confidence in her health as possible. Patients can schedule a checkup at one of NCHS’s women’s health centers to have her weight, nutrition, and more checked out. Women’s wellness services also recommend pelvic and breast exams at most wellness checks. This likely includes a pap smear and physical breast exam, and it may include a mammogram or breast cancer screening as well, depending on the individual woman, her risk factors for breast cancer, and her own personal preferences. About 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, and breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in women. However, since 1989, breast cancer mortality rates have decreased significantly—by about 38%—most likely because of increased breast health education and awareness, earlier detection methods, and better treatment. Women should be aware of the warning signs of breast cancer, including a change in the look or feel or their breasts and nipples and nipple discharge. NCHS knows that even if you have breast cancer risk factors, there are some things you can do that can help prevent breast cancer, or at the very least decrease your risk of getting it. These include exercising regularly, eating more fruits and vegetables, avoiding smoking, drinking less alcohol, doing breast self-exams, maintaining a healthy weight, and more. NCHS has women’s health clinics that can help you determine your breast cancer risk and can perform breast cancer screenings. We can also provide treatment options should you find yourself with a breast cancer diagnosis.
