Ear Infection Symptoms
When it comes to looking for ear infection symptoms, it helps to know that there are three (3) types of ear infections: inner, middle, and outer ear infections. When trying to diagnose yourself when you feel off, see if any of the following ear infection symptoms stand out that may indicate an ear infection for you or your child:
These three symptoms are often attributed in an inner ear infection, but can also indicate inner ear inflammation instead of an infection. In some cases, having issues with the inner ear can also indicate a risk of meningitis, a more serious condition.
If you have a middle ear infection, you may experience an earache, a feeling of “fullness” in the ear, and some fluid may be draining from the affected ear. It’s not uncommon that a middle ear infection, also known as otitis media, will also cause you to deal with a fever at the same time. Some difficulty hearing may be noticed until the infection begins to go away.
An outer ear infection, sometimes referred to as otitis externa, can cause your ear to…
- Have an itchy rash
- Be tender
- Appear reddish
- Start to swell up
If you’re noticing any of these ear infection symptoms, give us a call and schedule an appointment to get treatment or antibiotics for ear infection.
How to Treat an Ear Infection
Getting ear infection treatment is thankfully relatively simple compared to some other kinds of infections and conditions. Like the symptoms, different treatments may be prescribed based on where the infection is taking place: inner, middle, or outer ear. Generally speaking, you will need antibiotics for almost all types of infections for the middle and outer ear.
Antibiotics can come in a couple different forms, such as an oral medication or a direct application to the ear by way of ear drops for ear infection. You may also be prescribed or advised to pick up anti-inflammatory pain medication.
When it comes to outer ear infections, a prescribed application of an antimicrobial and/or anti-inflammatory medication may be used (if the infection is bacterial).
Viral infections on the other hand will require more hands on tending of the irritation or simply waiting for the infection to take care of itself.
In some cases, your doctor may suggest a more significant, or specialized, treatment to take care of the ear infection.
