From treating childhood obesity to identifying hearing problems to getting school physicals, we know how busy you can be.  However, please make sure that you schedule in time to have a children’s eye test for all of your children. If your child has not had an eye exam yet, now is the time to schedule. It’s important that your child gets a kids eye exam regularly to help identify any vision problems, because they can negatively impact the quality of life that your child will experience.

Kids Eye Exam

It’s not uncommon for children to have some type of vision problem, even as early as preschool. In fact, we would recommend that families get their eye test for children done as early as 12 months, and then again at each physical, based on the recommendation of a pediatric physician.

How Poor Vision Affects Education

A kids eye exam can identify issues with vision early on in a child’s life, which can impact the quality of their education. When a child has difficulty seeing, whether they are nearsighted, farsighted, or have some degree of blindness, it causes them to be unable to see certain educational, visual elements in the classroom and in their day-to-day life.

Young children that haven’t had a children vision test, or haven’t learned that it’s possible to not have perfection visual clarity, may not understand that blurry vision isn’t normal. If they’re not aware, they’ll think it’s normal and as a result won’t bring up their difficulty seeing things clearly.

Improving Children’s Vision

Improving a child’s vision can begin after a children’s eye exam has identified the type of vision loss that your child is experiencing. In some cases, a simple seating rearrangement can provide a temporary “fix” to blurry vision, such as moving closer to the chalkboard, but more reliable solutions should be considered as early as possible.

For example, a child getting glasses can drastically improve the quality of life of the child in both their day-to-day and their education. This allows them to see every part of the classroom, such as the chalkboard and other visual educational aids (e.g., posters) that are around the room that can assist them with their learning.
