Root Canal Procedure
At North County Health Services, we have general dentists who can help you with decisions regarding endodontic or root canal treatment. Endodontic services that we provide consist primarily of root canals for anterior teeth and pulpal therapy for baby teeth. Most posterior teeth are referred to a specialist. Root canal procedure is a dental process that can save your tooth when the pulp (a soft tissue underneath the layers of white enamel and dentin) becomes infected or inflamed. This procedure itself is done to the inside of the tooth to help eliminate or prevent future decay.
An inflamed or infected pulp can be caused by many factors, including deep decay, repeated dental procedures on a tooth, faulty crowns, cracks or chips in the tooth, trauma, and more. Delaying root canal treatment when the pulp of your tooth is infected or inflamed, the more discomfort you may find yourself in, and the may result in a less successful prognosis.
The root canal procedure is designed to be comfortable for the patient. We do our best to make the root canal process as painless and comfortable as possible, and could be compared to having a tooth filling procedure. The root canal procedure involves carefully removing the infected or inflamed pulp, cleaning the inside of the tooth, and then filling and sealing it with a rubber-like substance called “gutta-percha.” The tooth will then be topped with a crown or permanent filling for added protection against decay.
Patients who are getting their first root canal may be concerned about whether or not their tooth will function as normal. Root canal treatment is designed to alleviate the problem inside the tooth and restore it as close as possible to its original state. In most cases the root canal procedure will allow you to continue eating and smiling just as you would have had before the procedure.
