Teen SMART Outreach
Project Summary
Teen SMART Outreach (TSO) is a fresh and innovative program working to reduce unintended teen pregnancies in San Diego's North County Region. Youth Health Educators conduct outreach presentations to youth tackling topics including:
• Accessing Care & Services
• Goal Setting
• Positive Self Image
• Reducing Unintended Risks
• Realities of Unprotected Sex: STI’s & HIV
• Communication: Adults, Friends & Partners
TSO also works with a group of young teen mothers developing their skills as part of a Teen Parent Panel. The Panel conducts presentations, providing a candid look at the realities of being a teen parent in today’s society. TSO has come to understand that our youth are faced with an alarming number of negative and powerful influences; leaving a void for positive role models. TSO remains committed to exposing youth to the benefits of “slowing down”, gaining awareness and being Teen SMART!
Target Audience
Teen SMART promotes abstinence as a primary defense against unintended pregnancies, but teens are also informed about the importance of using protection and encouraged to change "risky" behaviors.
